Ryan Shabino’s passion for construction started long before he built a successful career out of it.
Growing up, Ryan spent a lot of time with his dad with projects around their own home. Whether it was finishing their basement, building a deck, a screened porch, garage or backyard pond, Ryan was hooked. He could hardly wait to get home from school so they could jump back into whichever project they were working on. He found unbelievable joy and satisfaction in creating something from start to finish.
For a while, he imagined he’d go down the architect route—until he realized he couldn’t draw anything other than straight lines and circles. But building? He could build anything.
And so it only makes sense that Ryan would one day go on to pursue engineering and start his own construction company, Paradigm Construction | Homes & Renovations.
When Ryan wasn’t building or in school, you could just about always find him working.
As a kid, he helped with lawn care throughout his neighborhood, and by the time he was in high school, he’d taken on more work. He’d work for his dad at the Hy-Vee bakery from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm, go home for lunch, and then head out to be the groundskeeper for the local soccer association.
Through all of this, though, the part that he lived for was the conversations with the regulars who’d come into Hy-Vee each morning for their coffee and doughnuts. Those interactions made getting out of bed at 5am worth it.
Long story short, hard work, commitment, and integrity are not foreign to Ryan.
Fast forward a few years and Ryan graduated from ISU for Construction Engineering in 2010. His first job out of school was at Kiewit Underground as a Project Engineer. There, he was responsible for designing concrete formwork, working platforms, safety plans, and the like, all related to construction 150'+ below ground. Given that his graduation coincided with the tail end of the housing crisis, he was extremely grateful to be a team member there.
After a couple of years, Ryan made his way back above ground and began working as a Project Manager for a local Commercial General Contractor for 7 years. Within that role, he had the opportunity to manage all kinds of projects ranging from small $100k renos to multimillion-dollar new construction.
But as much as that company was a good fit, the work was not. Eventually, the hustle and bustle of the commercial world burned him out and he wasn’t finding the satisfaction or growth he needed. The problem, he realized, was that there just wasn’t enough of a connection to the people he was building for. It felt like a rinse-and-repeat process, and at the end of the day, he craved more connection and the ability to make an even greater impact on people’s lives.
So after plenty of late-night conversations with his wife Nicole to figure out if starting his own business made sense for their growing family, Ryan decided to take the leap and start Paradigm Construction.
Founded in 2019, Paradigm Construction | Homes & Renovations offers custom homes, renovations, and additions in the greater Des Moines area. While working hard to bring their client's vision to life, they hold up their mission to enhance the lives of those they interact with and create “a model of construction with integrity.
This mission is woven into every aspect of their work. From the internal culture of the company, their relationship with vendors and trade partners, and, of course, their customer’s experience, every single conversation and decision comes from a place of integrity.
To Ryan, integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one's looking or when no one will notice the difference. Because it does make a difference.
Every team member at Paradigm is carefully selected for their strong character and integrity. Ryan believes that if he and his team can focus on their self-growth and work on being better humans while they’re at work, it will follow them into their personal relationships and community as well. And that’s the community impact he strives for.
So when you work with Paradigm, not only can you expect the highest quality work, you can also expect the highest quality service.
You can expect that they’ll do what they say they’re going to do when they say they’re going to do it. That they’ll take every action they believe to be right, and communicate quickly and clearly through every phase of the project. That they’ll be honest about what you can and can’t expect.
And at the end of the day, they will always take responsibility for their team, their actions, and their performance. Because that’s true integrity.
